Girlsday at SEKISUI Alveo: A close industry experience

SEKISUI Alveo welcomed special visitors at Montageweg in Roermond in mid-April: 14 young schoolgirls and two companions were able to get a look behind the scene. And they discovered that production and development inside the manufacturing industry is no male domain.

Information about Girlsday

Since 2010, the Girlsday is organized by VHTO, the Dutch National Expert Organisation on Girls/Women and Science/Technology. In the past, SEKISUI Alveo used the event to introduce young girls to professional fields in science and technology.

This year, the students of Lyceum Schöndeln in Roermond followed the invitation of SEKISUI Alveo to attend Girlsday, organized and executed by Kim Jacobs, HR intern.

Together with Ellen Rutjens (Laboratory Technician), Sabine van den Heuvel (Development Engineer) and Charon Niessen (intern in Quality, Environment, Safety & Health department – QESH) she provided an overview on what SEKISUI Alveo is and what is being produced in Roermond. They also gave some insights into their professions and told what they like about their job. The schoolgirls saw that the produced foams are being used in a great variety of products. During the following plant tour, the girls were shown the different machinery and production steps needed for manufacturing.

Then, the hands-on part of the day came up. The students had to apply weights to foams of different forms and density to see how robust each product is. In addition, they witnessed a flame test, which is used to determine if the present foam sample is in compliance with determined specifications. At the end of the day, the schoolgirls were given a backpack of SEKISUI Alveo, filled with different foam products as well as a souvenir from the 70th anniversary of SEKISUI.

The girls spent an interesting day at Montageweg, according to Patrick Raemaekers, teacher of “Research & Design” at the Lyceum Schöndeln. “The Girlsday perfectly matches the approach to my lessons. With this, the girls get to know the professions and see that the plant is not a men’s world”, he happily adds. Just like in his lessons, the girls got to experience theory and practice at SEKISUI Alveo very close. He was particularly impressed that the girls were given insights into different profession fields. “The chance of the girls willing to study in one of these field is higher”, Raemaekers states further.

SEKISUI Alveo looked back on a pleasant day, too. “The conducted activities were great to give the girls practical experience”, Kim Jacobs reported after the event. The enthusiams of the girls participating at Girlsday was particularly fine for her. Consequently, the event contributed to foster the relationship of the company to the local community. And: SEKISUI Alveo underlined its ambition to invest into the young generation.
